Deadfellaz (NFTs with Secret Traits?)
Hello 👋
Today we’re talking about Deadfellaz.
Lots of people sent me a message about the amazing Deadfellaz community (the ‘horde’), the artwork and the secret traits…
I was NOT disappointed.
Let’s jump straight in.
#2 Deadfellaz
Welcome to the world of zombie NFTs with a killer team and long-term ambition.
What are Deadfellaz?
10,000 'undead' characters with unique traits.
Art by Psych
Concept and community by Betty
Visit the official website
See collection on OpenSea
Just like we did with Doodles, let’s start with the characters and traits…
Body Grade
Every Deadfellaz character is either fresh, damaged or rotten.
This is important later on for those secret traits.
Heads
Mohawk (339)
Betty (353)
Red cap (350)
Bandana (304)
Bantu knot (343)
Spiked (357)
Ramona (302)
None of the characters are explicitly gendered and they include a diverse range of features. Diversity and inclusion is part of the core ethos running through the whole project.
No rare traits?
• Unlike many pfp projects, Deadfellaz doesn't have many 'rare' traits listed.
• The features are quite equally distributed across the characters.
• It's the combinations that create rarity.
Bodies
Deadfellaz has some of the best outfits and body designs (black tie suit on a zombie, anyone?). Most have relatively equal rarity, but some are more desirable among the community, such as purple fur.
Spotty fur (208)
Blue Baseball (253)
Black Hoody (220)
Tattoos (221)
Black tie (251)
Blue tracksuit (240)
Eyes
The undead need creepy eyes so you’ll find reptiles, mutants and sly eyes in the collection.
Mutant (576)
Reptile (568)
Dead (564)
Sly (568)
White glasses (539)
Thick rim (558)
Secret Traits
Okay, I’ve been teasing about secret traits for a while, Let’s take a look at them.
Secret traits are not listed on OpenSea or the Deadfellaz website.
They only appear when you combine certain traits together. You have to find them!
I've included four of the secret traits here, but I’ll let you find the rest (I think there are 15, but I could be wrong).
Secret Traits
Blood necklace (52)
8 Ball (155)
Dagger tattoo and 4 earrings (76)
13 face tattoo (93)
Tip: try combing the ‘rotten’ grade with your favourite traits. Or jump into the Discord and go hunting for info.
I LOVE THIS
Secret traits is a small thing that makes you fall in love with a project.
Discovering the secret traits and hunting for them makes you feel closer to the community, like you’re an insider.
It's like finding an Easter Egg in the Pixar world.
I think this creates true long-term connection between the project and its holders.
The Team
If you’re investing in a project, you’re also investing in the team. Deadfellaz has an experienced and passionate power-couple running the show.
Outside the metaverse, Betty and Psych previously built their own agency and worked with some of the biggest brands in the world.
BETTY
Betty is the voice of Deadfellaz and community lead.
She’s one of the most active and passionate people in the space.
Betty came up with the overall concept for Deadfellaz and drives it forward.
PSYCH
PsychStreetArt is the artist behind the project.
He’s part of an artist collective called Depthcore
Go view his 1/1s on Foundation.
Take a moment to just check out some of his work outside Deadfellaz too 🔥
Note: I'm always bullish on founders who have a driving passion for what they do. This team has not just popped up overnight. Psych has been making digital art for over a decade. Together with Betty, they have a proven track record of success and they give back A LOT to the wider NFT and art community.
The Community
The Deadfellaz community (or 'horde') is incredible strong and loyal. How’s this for a statistic:
89% of Deadfellaz are not listed for sale.
That’s higher than Doodles and Bored Ape Yacht Club.
People are finding their ‘forever Deadfellaz’ and holding on.
Deadfellaz Infected S1
There’s a strong connection to the artist community, too.
Deadfellaz released a limited edition range of characters in collaboration with other artists.
The project is called Infected S1.
Total of 186 NFTs (13 from each artist).
The collaborators include:
CoolCats
Stephy Fung
Fat Baby
Ghxst
Gossamer
Nook
ROMBrandt
Survival games
Inside the Discord, the community hosts survival games (text-command games where you try to avoid dying a horrible, funny death).
Winners get access to exclusive mints with other projects and other prizes.
The community also shares their own creative projects like music (recently judged by Pussy Riot!)
The Roadmap
Okay, this is the coolest-looking roadmap of any project I’ve ever seen. Ever.
But what’s on it?
Deadfrenz - A new NFT drop of undead animals and pets.
Partnerships - The team has already partnered with Ozzy Osbourne's project CryptoBats. More to come.
Merch and toys - Deadfellaz plush toys coming soon.
3D versions - The team is working on turning all characters into 3D Deadfellaz. Ready for the metaverse?
This all tells me that Deadfellaz are building a long-term brand. I can see it evolving into TV, movies, games, merchandise and licensing especially in horror and graphic novels communities.
Deadfellaz are metaverse ready
Deadfellaz already owns a giant 24-plot estate in Decentraland.
It's called DeadZone13.
They built an epic, gothic castle to host parties, events and showcase art.
Steve Aoki played an exclusive event (you had to own a Deadfellaz to get in).
Here's me taking a metaverse selfie at the Deadfellaz castle.
Metaverse avatars are coming...
2D pixelated animations - Deadfellaz are now working pixelated versions of the characters, with metaverse interoperability.
3D versions - According to the roadmap, the team are developing 3D characters.
Augmented reality - Members of the community are already encorporating the early 3D characters into AR tech.
What do you own? IP and Copyright
This is one of the most interesting things about Deadfellaz
You own all the intellectual property and copyright to your NFT.
So if you want to put your Deadfellaz on a t-shirt and sell it, you can.
If you want to make music and use your Deadfellaz to promote it, you can.
Other projects (like Doodles and Crypto Punks) withhold the copyright, and only allow you to monetise up to $100k.
The Deadfellaz team believes that giving users freedom and ownership will help let the brand grow bigger. It will trigger new, original ideas.
I tend to agree.
Any downsides?
I always like to look for the downsides in any project.
The biggest one here is the lack of obvious rare traits.
Like it or not, rarity is one of the biggest drivers of activity in the NFT market.
So Deadfellaz might not experience as much trading volume as other projects.
BUT this is no bad thing if you’re looking for a long-term project and community.
It might not attract the day-traders and NFT flippers, but could bring long-term stability to the project.
Market stats 📈
Floor price: 2.5E (~$7,890)
Owners: 5.9k so it’s one of the most well dispersed 10k projects out there.
Volume: 2,000E
Final thoughts?
The more you learn about Deadfellaz, the more you love it.
The team has depth and history and passion which is the basis of every good project.
The community is strong and loyal. They’re here for more than just number-go-up.
The brand is expanding into every possible vertical.
I think Deadfellaz is a slow-burn project that will evolve and grow steadily over time. The lack of obvious rarity means you probably won’t get big rushes of fomo and pump/dump activity. If you’re a long-term investor and collector, then this is probably a good thing.
They’re the kind of team that just executes and delivers constantly. And I would never bet against that.
Thanks for reading!
